I live in a small town in Northern California. There's only about 7,500 people that live here, so news travels fast. Today I was greeted with the news that an entire family from Valley Springs, where I live, was wiped out in the blink of an eye in a plane crash. A local dentist, his wife, who was a pediatrician, and their two children were on their way to a ski trip in Butte, Montana. The weather was below freezing and the air was at 100% humidity. Ice is being looked at as the possible cause of the plane crash that killed 14 people.
This is a shocking bit of news and affects all of us in Valley Springs profoundly. It shows how little things like the economy can be put into perspective. How seriously can you really take it, when your life can be gone in the blink of an eye...
When I went onto the internet the news still centered around Madoff's jail time, Dancing with the Stars disasters, and the latest gizmo from Apple. Life goes on no matter what happens to your physical body. If your business fails, if you lose your home, if someone you love leaves you behind - life goes on.
So, what's really important here? I know it's tough when you're in the middle of a recession to thing logically about how important money really is because those of us still here really need it to live comfortably. But I find it helps every once in a while to remember how mortal we are and how short our time really is on this Earth. I propose that we keep thinking about the good things we have and how precious life is everyday and refuse to participate in the recession.

It so happens I've been in this situation. I reinvented myself by becoming a business owner instead of an employee. It's been tough at times, but being in control of my life and my income is worth the struggle.

What would you do if you got to work today to find a pink slip in your mail box? Where would you turn? How would you pay the bills, feed and provide shelter for your family?
